Since 1979, Helmut Maier takes part in hillclimb races with a Spiess engine and is an integral part of our Spiess family. Animated by Helmut Maier's successes and in order to be able to meet the demand of further customers, Spiess expands its portfolio. The goal is very clear from the beginning: Back to the Roots!  And in April 2019, it was the time. Erwin Buck brings his VW Scirocco with a 1.6 l Spiess engine into action. The body of the well-known orange Scirocco is modified by Erwin Buck himself and shines in new colors: white/red, the historic Scirocco Spiess design from the 70s.

The launch is a great success. Erwin Buck is 2019 KW-Berg-Cup winner in the 1600 cc class, takes fifth place in the overall ranking and is third overall in both the hillclimb championship and touring cars.

Spiess decides to modify the engine again so that it can be used in a higher class. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the new 2.0l engine is hardly used in 2020, but it is used in 2021! Erwin Buck is not only vice mountain champion, but also DMSB Automobile Touring Car Hill Climb Cup champion and KW Hill Climb Cup winner in 2021. In addition, he takes third place at the FIA Hill Climb Masters in Braga in category 1, group 3.

Both Helmut Maier with a 1.6l engine and Erwin Buck with a 2.0l engine will continue to compete with Spiess Power in the 2022 season!

Of course, we will keep you updated!
